This sounds like your shutdown file has been corrupted. The easiest way to fix it is to re-install windows from the original XP disk or CD. IT will repair the faulty shutdown file.

Insert the CD, then reboot the pc and it will load the XP disk, follow the prompts, and you can do a full install in the same location and it will do the rest for you.
Back up any important files first though before you do this, just in case anything goes wrong.

Have you been creating "restore points" as you go along?

It is a good idea to create a restore point immediately before installing a new program -- just in case.

It is also a good idea, at a time when everything is running smoothly, to create a restore point and make a note to the effect that everything is o.k. Then, when something gets nutzed up as it seems to have with your Shutdown, you have something to return to.

Try to go back to your previous system restore and see if this does the job.
