No, but there are different TV formats in different parts of the world (NTSC, PAL, SECAM, and variations on those), so the tape, VCR, and TV all have to be the same type or you'll either get no picture or a badly distorted one. There are special VCRs that can play any format of tape to any type of TV, like the Samsung SV5000W Multiformat Worldwide VCR.
