There are two written languages, English and American English. English is written everywhere except America. Fortunately we can usually understand each other. There is no need to be abusive on either side.

I am even learning to be tolerant towards Yahoo English, although I sometimes have no idea what the writer means.

British English was used in your country even before it was called the United States. At some point, people started spelling things differently because their pronunciation changed. In the late 1800s, a man named Noah Webster decided to try and standardiz/se American spelling. He simplified the spelling of many words to look more like how they sound. His books became very popular and they came to be the standard in America. I think ever since then spelling has officially been different.

The thing with English is that its spelling has not (or hardly) changed over the past few centuries, even though pronunciation did change. I suppose Americans wanted to try and make spelling and pronunciation a bit more close to each other.

Neither is better, they are just different.

I'm not a native speaker of either British or American. What I learned at school was British, but I learned most of my English off of the internet and television. 80 percent of that was American.

You are the sort of prick that makes Americans look bad in the eyes of the rest of the world, don't forget the people that are helping you with your terrorist crap and listening to all the rubbish that comes from your country and if spelling is your biggest problem in life ,well you are one stuffed up person.

YOU ask why others are stupid??? I'll bet you voted for GWBush, didn't you! (Or would have done, if you were OLD enough...!!)

I COULD ask why zip-john writes 'of' as 'ov', 'ageing' as 'aging' 'know' as 'noe', 'don't' as 'Donte', and 'whinging' as 'whing e ing',
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AvDwNL8gTZpizVR5jAgcHsvsy6IX?qid=20061118210752AABK12n
and 'bare chested hairy men' as 'bear chested hairy men'
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AnhLKxK2RbOL8H0cBTCKO7rsy6IX?qid=20061117154649AAvabgV
and in the same question, 'how' as 'hou', 'don't' as 'dont', 'love' as 'luv', and 'I' as 'i'.

But I won't waste my time asking that, because it's obvious that zip-john has his/her own unique language, with his/her own unique way of spelling everything! At least it's NORMAL to spell COLOUR! We don't have to fantasise about it - it's the word's original spelling!!! And why does it bother you that the American way isn't meekly followed all over the Western world? It's not going to be YOU in charge, is it? So why such hostility just because American English is evolving one way, and English is evolving in another way? It just shows a very narrow mind.

Globalise is considered correct by MY British English spell-check - but I can't say the same about globalize.

Americans have their own language. They call it American the rest of the English speaking world should call it bast-English. colour and grey are the proper way and my favourite way of spelling.

And what is a pom

Colour is french for color. Grey is french for gray. Back a few years ago, either spelling was correct. Now color is correct and gray.

But we still accept 'theatre' for theater. And there are others, but when I remember them, I will post.

why do American insist on being lazy and mispelling words like colour, and why do they put their stuff in the trunk ,when smart people put it in the boot.
and why do they sit on their fanny ,
whilsts we make love to them ,
everybody knows that proper English is a better language
why does yahoo insist on using inferior American as a guide line
this must affect the quality of the show
