is it to serve a drink in a specific glass? When reading drink recipes it always says what type of glass to serve it in. For example do martinis really have to be served in martini glasses?

Yes shey should, but if you don't have any then make due with what you've got.

Its the people that make the party!

Good glasses Definately make a difference though. Theyhave an inside rim that is sanded flat and does not have a bubble at the rim. This bubble on cheaper glass deflects the flow of wine to the sides of your mouth where your taste buds for sour are concentrated. The sanded glass puts the wine straight back on your tongue where you taste fruitier flavors.

This makes the wine and the Martini taste better and the food or nibbles you may be eating as well.

Try your own experiment...you'll be surprised.

It won't change the flavor or anything. Some types, depending on how the volume is spread out, will keep drinks cooler longer than others.
If your recipe tells you something like "add coke to top" the right glass is pretty useful. Otherwise, it is aesthetics.

when in rome! if you are at home, serve it in a coffee mug if u want to. if you are having friends over or a party, yes, the proper glassware is to be used. you should have martini glasses, standard wine glasses, highball glasses, champage flutes, and beer pints

it really is all just manners, like using a salad fork or a soup spoon. Depends on your manners. if you are serving your buddy a martini, I am sure he would be fine having it in a coffee cup, but at a formal dinner the correct cup is proper.

For dinner parties, I reckon the glass is important.
Otherwise it's up to the individual.
I know I like my wine in a wine glass, my shorts in a short glass and my beer in a beer glass.

it is really important because different shapes cool differently so it will actually taste better. however, if you don't have specific glasses, don't worry, it's not bad, it just could be better.
