I overheard somebody talking the other day about a cousin that was twice removed from the family. I was just wondering what that meant.

It means you have to go through five other blood relatives (including parents of siblings) to trace your family tree to them.
A lot of people don't fully understand the terminology or use it correctly, though, so that may not be exactly what that person meant. You'll have to ask them to be sure.

Let me try to think back on this....a cousin "twice removed" is actually a 2nd cousin which is.....the son or daughter of your first cousin.

It means two generations apart. Your 1st cousin's child is your first cousin once removed. Your 1st cousin's GRANDchild is your first cousing twice removed.

Once you remove them, are they still your cousin?
Actually for each generation there is another "removed" added.
your 1st cousin's kids to you are 1st cousin once removed, your kids and your 1st cousin's kids are second cousins.
Your second cousin woud be the child of your parent's cousin.
1st cousins share grandparents, 2nd cousins share great grandparents
your 1st cousin's grandkids to you are 1st cousins twice removed.

Twice removed means they are 2 generations away from you meaning 2nd cousins on either your mother or father's side.
They are what is called "distant cousins".

basically when you are removed in the title of cousin ship, then your mom's sister's child had a child.
It's like this...
Granma+Granpa
Mom/Dad ........ Aunt/Uncle
You ......... Cousin
your kid ......... Cousin's kid
Your kid's kid ......... Cousin's kid's kid
you and Cousin's kid are cousins, once removed.
you and cousin's kid's kid are cousins, twice removed
the difference between being cousins and cousins x removed are the number of generations between you and that person.
Whereas you and Cousin are 1st cousins,
and your kid and cousin's kid are 2nd cousins
you and cousin's kid are 1st cousin's, once removed
you and cousin's kid's kid are 1st cousins, twice removed
your kid and cousin's kid's kid are 2nd cousins, once removed...

I alway wondered this also. So if San Diego's explanation is correct, then who would be my 2nd cousin? I always thought my first cousin's child was my 2nd cousin....
