Most people had been convinced that by buying bigger portions of fast foods, they are getting more food. People tend to eat more, or eat “super size,” being convinced that in super size fast foods, there is an extra value so it appears to be cheaper. Thus it sounds a wised idea to avail food at a lesser price with more amounts based on a fact that man’s biological make-up leads him to eat more when there is more in front of him.
Those who order a fast food giant hamburger and chips yet order a diet Coke have reasons for sure. The reasons I can think of :
>>They are aware that the bigger portion of the food they eat got lots of extra calories but they choose to eat such big serving to save and to enjoy being stuffed at the same time. They are aware as well that Coke contains high calories out of its high sugar content thus they are trying to do some mathematical balance – diet Coke to be lesser calories not to have more additional calories, thus lessened overall caloric intake.
>>They believe that the fast food they are supposed to eat is equivalent to the usual meal they eat. Knowing that Coke is with high calories, opting for it is believed to lessen extra caloric intake.
>>They are not aware those fast foods they order contain more calories, fat, sugar, salt and/or cholesterol which is far high as compared to a healthy meal. Diet Coke is ordered believing not to get extra calories.
>>Fast food became irresistible and addictive that they can’t help wanting to eat more, so by diet Coke the calories in their total meal will lessen a bit.
>>They are aware that absorption of sugar in Coke is very fast thus those who needs precaution on rapid rise of blood sugar needs to limit drinking easily absorbed sugar – thus the choice is diet Coke. Sugar (carbohydrates) from fast foods takes time to be metabolized.
>>They want to enjoy with their giant size fast foods and diet cola taste is their preference as its perfect partner. (Diet Coke tastes different and it is my choice as well.)
>>Just they love and wanted to.♥

Because the calories are additive. If you eat 500 calories on the burger and another 300 on the fries skipping the 150 calories from a non-diet coke is still a saving.
If there was a diet burger and diet fries they could order that style too but since there isn't they skimp on the only thing they can control.

It has nothing to do with the extra calories - there is enough calories in the meal that the coke will make no difference
I am diabetic type 2 and I can - at times - get very close to being Hypoglycemic - and that is when I have to eat - right away - before it gets worse. but I will NEVER drink coke . This will only make my sugar level go right up but drop down again very rapidly and that is not a good way to manage diabetes.
The burger and large fries are food that takes time to be digested and will work slower into our system (not that we want to have large fries anyway) And there is nothing wrong with eating the burger and the fries - as long as we are careful and don't have them all the time.
As for OU812's comment - you obviously have not seen someone who goes into hyperglycemia, have you? (or hypoglycemia for that matter)
Please don't make quick assumptions and judegmental comments before you know all the fact

They want to try to minimize the caloric damage while still getting what they want. If you just HAVE to have hamburgers, a large fry and a soda- the only thing you can make diet is the coke.
They feel better with at least one attempt at a healthier or lower calorie meal. Go figure.

I do that. And the reason I do that is because I like diet coke better than regular coke (regular coke is way too sweet for me) and as long as I'm stuffing my face with greasy foods, I might as well save a couple hundred calories I would have gotten from the regular Coke.

They order the diet coke to make them feel better for eating the fast food. Diabetic or not, practically all fast food is loaded with sugar, (a fruit & yogurt parfat has as much calories a a Big Mac, even the salads, especially the dressings have sugar in them) so the diet coke isn't going to do a thing for them.....Want more proof, watch SuperSize Me.....that made me quit eating fast food.
