Well the Bible says that Mary was highly favored. And I'm not Catholic. But women did not have the break then that we have now. So, I have to say that for that reason it don't bother me. Jesus was the first one that I know of or have ever heard of that treated women like persons. So maybe that is one reason she is so popular.

I don't know why they started it, but the Roman Catholic Church started it quite a while back. Some of them even pray to and by Mary. Which is completely contradicts what the Lord told us in the Bible, because Jesus Christ is the sole mediator between man and God.

As salvation was gained for the human race through Mary to the Son of God, Jesus the Christ. Praying to Mary is praying to the mother of Jesus the Christ. If I ask you to pray for me it is good, if I ask Mary to pray for me it is good. In fact, Jesus came out of secrecy at her request for the wedding couple at the feast of Cana. Praying to Mary is always good in Christian community.
Jesus handed Saint John His mother from the cross, and to each true Christian forever. "Behold thy mother"

The Qu'ran says that even the mother of Mary was a devoutly religious woman. That when she found she was pregnant she swore to God that her child would also be a great follower. Mary suffered from great scorn when she appeared pregnant when no man had touched her. People respect her because of her courage, and her faith, and because she is the mother of a great prophet of God.
