The other two answers are sufficient, but I just want to jump on the band wagon and say the same thing, but I will BS my way through with an elaborate answer so that you may think that I am answering more.

I actually searched the web and found out that most scientists don't know why people yawn. If you are interested, read this short explanation : http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives/aug99/934846431.Gb.r.html

I learned a lot by reading it, I hope it answers your question. You can even e-mail the person about this topic... If you find out, please post the answer and let me know...

I'm not sure. But right when i read that question i yawned lol. maybe if you just like think about taking break, itll happen. Bcuz yawning really means taking a bigger breath than usual. Which pretty much means ur not geting enough oxygen for that period of time due to loss of sleep and what not. Hopefully this can help at least a little.

People yawn because they are short on oxygen. We asociate yawning with tired or boredness because when a person is tired they tend to breath slower, or take shallow breaths. Same thing as when a person is bored they are not neccesarilly paying attention and their breathing becomes shallow. Your brain will do what ever it can to keep homeostacis therefore, yawning to get the large amount of air your body needs. When you feel the need to yawn and don't want to do it take several deep breaths and you will notice the need to yawn will be gone.

Your brain believes it is striving for oxygen, triggering a deep breath to quickly acquire air for your body. The funny thing is, it's a psychological action and is contagious (yes, you will yawn when you see or hear someone else do it.) You may even yawn while reading this. And it's not because of my boring writing style.

A yawn indicates a lack of oxygen intake of the body....this is always taked about when you are getting tiered....The reason for this being is because your body will start to slow down (geting tiered) and it will not process the suffecient amount of oxygen that your body needs at that moment....hence the yawn....it is a massive goulp of oxygen.

yawn means there is lack of adequate oxygen......next time feel the need to yawn breath deeply at least four times ..... actually has nothing to do with being tired

Actually, it's been proven that it has nothing to do with oxygen. Rather, it has to do with a shortage of CO2.

Why does it seem like you yawn after someone else? They just don't know.

When you are tired your respiration slows down and yawning is a way to get more oxygen into your lungs.
