It's fact and fiction rolled into one. It was made to make you think about what could be the possibilities.
It does teach about history surrounding the stories.

It would be interesting if Jesus had children, I'd wonder who his decedents are and what they are doing.

You must read the book first...
As one pointed out, Dan Brown mentioned at the beginning it is fiction.
He also mentioned secret societys and their modus operendi...he done a lot of research on these, and mixed in these to make the story interesting and thought provoking, to make you use your imagination, your thinking processes.
Da Vinci was one who belonged to a secret society to protect the truth of the matter. Sir Isach Newton was another, Victor Hugo and others.
The catholic church has their secret society, to hide the truth. Now before you get irritated, let me interget a thought here.
During Jesus's day the Jews had law that if you teach about God and the information in the laws and the prophets you had to be married so as to give counsel to married ones and family.
Now Marry Magdelene was a follower of Jesus and a very close friend. How close?
Read in the Bible John 20: 15-17.
Although the book of Philip and the book of Mary Magdalene are not canonized in the Bible still they have history and other info that is related to the days of Jesus.
Philip and Mary Magdalene mention the relationship between Jesus and Mary Magdalene, yes they were married. She was with child when she was present at the torture stake or cross.
After which she was esscorted far away to another country.
Dan Brown used that info in his book.
When you put the pieces together and do your own reserch on it like I did...personally I would give the book
and the movie and the special features there of 65% fact.
Peace.....

To sale books. The Da Vinci Code is completely based on another book that came out a few years before it called Holy Blood - Holy Grail, with a few changes so it can't be a "complete" copy of the other.

Come up with a controversial idea yourself and you can make yourself rich too.

some bits and pieces of old (and not so old) false traditions; put together by an author so he could sell many copies of his book and, he hoped, make a lot of money from the book and from the movie rights!!

And Satan is pleased when people are led astray, forgetting what the Scriptures teach.

Please do yourself a favor and take a look at the book, it clearly states in the forward of the book that it is a fictional story of the Christ.
