3 people went to a motel. They paid $10 each and went upstairs. The bellboy carried their luggage. The people were very polite, so when the bellboy went downstairs and told the manager, the manager decided to let them pay $25 instead of $30 altogether.
So he gave the bellboy $5 to give to them. While the bellboy was going upstairs he thought, "You can't split $5 into 3." So he decided he'd give them $1 off each person and pocketed the $2.
Now if he gave them $1 off, they paid $9 each. $9 x 3 = $27. The bellboy pocketed $2. Where has the remaining dollar gone?

You stated that the mnager decided to charge the boys $25 each instead of $30 each, but yet he only gave the bellboy five dollars to give back to the boys the question should actually be "Where is did other $10 go? Obviously the manager didn't pay attention or just decided to keep it for himself!

They didn't pay $9 each. They paid $25 in total, got $3 back, and the bellboy kept the other $2.
