Something along the lines of why I could use the assistance and let them know why I didn,t do well the first time in school.

I dont know of a reference letter however I had to appeal once and I basically told them that I had not been serious about my studies and how I had pressure on me to work to provide for my family but now I was more grounded. I think they will usually approve you the first time but it is important to improve your grades while on your 'probation'. Good luck!
