I just posted this to someone else who asked the same question.
The best car stereo on the market right now would be Eclipse, they might not be the flashiest, but as far as sound, control, and reliability, they are the best. Then you'd have to go with Pioneer, both the regular and Premier lineups. Pioneer has been doing car audio for a long time, and their decks are always going to be on the top of the list. After that, I'd have to go with Alpine, but only if you are planning on doing a system. Then you fall into the rest: Panasonic, Sony, JVC, Kenwood, etc. Another good company is Nakamichi, but they are hard to find, are a little expensive, and don't look that great, but they are audiophile stereos. When you say best...how much are you talking in paying...price has a lot to do with options on a stereo...I prefer Sony and Pioneer...My sony is 11 years old and has the features of most newer model stereos!...(CDtext, Diskchanger,MP3/atrac 3, Aux, Rear and front inputs, Headphones, and TV control) so it really depends on what your looking for

Alpine has a new product line called F1. Now i think just a headunit is like 2500... this line contains a 7" DIN monitor, 2-way and 3-way component sets, 4/3/2 channel amplifiers, multimedia managers, and hihg resolution D/A converters. The speakers run 3500 a pair for the 3 ways and same for the amps.... the price is rediculous but for quality, its gonna be hard to beat. and that inculdes focal, morel and other high end companies.

Not a good question to ask as most people will try to tell you that the brand they have in thier vehicle is the best. Depending on what you want or need in features on it you should go with whatever one you think will work the best for you.

any pionner car stereo is good just pick from the models available

Kenwood is good Eclipse is also good i think one of the best ones would be Alpine.
