Picked up some bowling pins at the local alley as targets. The manager also gave me an old Hammer bowling ball. Everything I use on the Hammer will not spilt it. It absorbs everything I have used (.223, 7.62x54r, 8mm, 9mm, .45, .357, .44 and 1oz slug). Any suggestions ?

Penetration for most ammo is no problem. They go in.....that's it. We took safety into consiration as far as distance and back stop. If seen worse from some of the spinning targets made of metal for hanguns. There is a great spinning target out now made of ballistic plastics that really takes a beating. Holes just about self seal. Just like the bowling ball.....lol.

Bound's hubby here:

First off, how certain are you that the bullets are penetrating the bowling ball and not ricocheting off the round surface of the bowling ball? Second, you should be aware that the core of the bowling ball is almost solid cork, which will absorb more shock than you can dish out. Your bowling ball is really a poor choice in target from a safety stand point.

Good luck.

Well said BH. In order for the rounds to penetrate the ball it would have to be hit dead center. When you get done shooting the ball have it cut into 1” slabs on a band saw and post the photos for everyone to see, I use Webshots but Flickr would work. I am not big into shooting stuff at the range as I am the one that has to clean up the mess. But if you want to shoot something that is cool get some pumpkins set them on a wood post and blast them.

3" magnum slugs? There's not much more you can do to it.

I shot up a pair of Nikes once, some sort of issue, little to show for each shot. We eventually gave up, they still looked wearable.

Just keep at it, it will give up in the end.

use armor piercing bullets for the 50 cal, doesn't kick as much as you would think, and try to shoot threw the holes on the bowling ball
