i have real long thick hair and i was wondering if wetting my hair before i color it would be a good idea?

I color my daughters hair for her. She has super think hair that is down to the bottom of her back. Most important - buy two boxes or even three if you can afford it.
It is best to have someone do it for you but if not you can manage. Put the hair color on well combed out dry hair for best results. Start at the roots and work down. You have to have enough hair color to really soak the hair and after you get it all on work in it for about 10 minutes or you will have dry areas that dont get color. At this point you can add some water to one of the bottles to make sure all the hair is soaked well with the color.
You can get the hair a little wet first but your color may not take so I wouldnt do it. You can also add a toucn of conditioner to the hair coloring.

Remember - dont put brown or black on bleached-out light hair or you will have green hair after. You have to go red first to do this. And dark hair color will stain EVERYTHING you drop it on except ceramic tile or metal so be careful!

I have the same kind of hair. Usually, when I dye my hair, I make sure it's a bit damp. It makes it easier to get the dye to go all over my hair. I usually just use temporary dyes to add a red tint to my brown hair, so I don't know if it's okay for permanent dyes or bleach.
