I have a nearly 4 year old and a 2 year old. They both LOVE Dr. Seuss books. Especially Green Eggs and Ham and Mr Brown can Moo can you The Sneetches and Inside Outside Upside Down. Any Dr. Seuss because they have a lot of repetition and they child learns them easily. My nearly 4 year old "reads" Green Eggs and Ham and Inside outside Upside Down, Because he knows it so well and he loves it. He also likes Each Peach Pear Plum, Which is another he can "read". We're Going On A Bear hunt is another good one, and if you can get it on CD as well as book they can listen to it as it plays music and they sing the song. Both my boys love books as we introduced them at birth, so be aware that if they have not had books around a lot then they may not be gentle with them so pop-ups and so on may not be the best. I would stick to Dr. Seuss he is a favourite in my house, even with my husband.

NOT Books! My children are always disappointed when an aunt or cousin gets them a book for Christmas or their birthday. A 3 1/2 year old boy loves cars and race tracks and things that make noise. Garbage trucks, bulldozers and remote control dinosaurs. Anything but a book - they can go to the library everyday and get a book.

For the boy- Oreo cookie "Matching Middles". they have them near the board games, but slide down the lane to 1+ ages. My 4 year old still loves this shape matching game.
Let me add, since I was too quick to answer a 'toy' that my sons all love "Frog and Toad" books. They are easy to read, but more importantly, easy to understand. These are classic award winning books.
I would suggest something for the girl, however you didn't not specify age.

Hmmm. This is what I think. Kids have everything they need toy wise -- mine included. Why not get him a cool bath towel. I saw bath sets at Target tonight -- Cars, Spiderman...etc. They also had towels with big hoods that looked like a monkey, frog, etc.
I also like to just get a kid a sketchpad and some cool markers or those cool crayons that twist (Twistables -- my 2 and 4 yr old LOVE them).
He would probably like a Rescue Hero, Play Doh, books are great....anything with Dinosaurs (How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight), a Curious George Book.
Good luck.

Yeah and these days kids have everything so, it's really hard. I like things like small books, the new non staining markers and crayons and paper and coloring books. Also just a basket or container of little things to do crafty things filled with those things. Make sure it's not going to ruin the house. Small puzzles, board games and hats and glove sets are cute. Good luck.

My kids both loved the book Frederick by Leo Lionni. It is about a very talented mouse and the illustrations are beautiful collage pieces. My son also really liked the Little Critter books by Mercer Mayer. Happy shopping (and reading)

Young boys usually like superheroes. They are easy at that age. Clifford the Big Red Dog and Berenstain Bears seem to sell really big. Hot Wheels stories or ones with robots would usually be safe, also. Ask again when they are 9! lol

It has been a long time since I looked for books for toddlers but one of my youngest daughter's faves was Goodnight Moon. It is a wonderful book for that age~boy or girl! You can find many more on amazon.com just go to books for toddlers.
The Mercer Mayer books were also faves of both my daughters. They are also good for either gender.
