mine is the same. i just a product called garnier fructis soft curl cream. it comes in a green jar, i found it at target. you take a shower inthe morning, and run a blob of the cream through damp hair, scrunch, and do a quick stot of all-around hairspray. as it dries throughout the day, the curls becomes ringlets and really cute! i am able to wear my hair down now without the puff for the first time in a long time! i think this product could totally work 4 you! good luck!

TIGI Curls Rock!

The whole system will cost you about $50 ( that's 1-shampoo/2-conditioner/3-leave-in conditioner/ 4-curl booster/ 5-curl amplifier)

I never really got into salon products like I have gotten into Curls Rock.. It's expensive but it works.. I noticed a difference the first time I used it !

If you cant afford the whole system, definately get the step 5- Curl Amplifier.. Use one pump full, work through hair gently, and wrap hair up in a bun for about an hour, then let your hair down and it will be all good for you!

Good luck!!! I have the same problem. I use an anti- humectant (esp as I live in Seattle) which defines curls and prevents frizz. Also, I half way blow dry my hair then pull it to the base of my neck in a ponytail for a while, then take it out and finger comb while blow drying again. Sigh. It's a pain, but it works. It also reduces the poofiness a little. Try also straightening your hair with a roller brush and dryer or a flat iron.... use an anti- humectant.

First you need to start off with a good haircut, call around to some different salons and ask for a stylist thats good with thick, curly hair, use a good conditioner, then to style use a mousse and a curling cream(most salon brands have one) then wrap little sections around your finger to make nice curls, and let it air dry....diffusers are a waste of time unless absolutely necessary.

I use Garnier Fructis Soft Curl Cream, and I'm really happy with it. It's pretty cheap, and a little goes a long way.
My hair seems similar to yours, so you might want to check that out.
