Do dog run away when they are sick?

Question

Someone told me dogs run away when they are sick is this true (My dog of 10 years just ran away or something and i cannot find him, he has never done this EVER in his life, so it is very strange...i dont know what to do)

consult the veterinarian. a quick phone call could answer your questions? the pink swollen rings could be from any number of micro bacteria which could have been in the water if the vet requests to see the dog. take her in. a few thing that you should have around the house for instances like this are available at your vet, 1. a sterile eye ointment. 2. a good shampoo. if your dog does run into a wet natural area it will be a good idea to bathe the dog afterwords, and use the sterile eye ointment in the eyes (your vet can show you how to do this.) this will protect the eyes from irritation from the field water as well as the shampoo. Again Always consult you vet when you don't know what to do! many times a phone call will help reduce your anxiety, and help you care for your dog. have a great day and enjoy time with your pets.

I would say they do. When I was a very little girl I had an old dog. My Grandmother told me that she had been sick for some time and that one day I was out playing with her and she started walking away from the yard, I called her and called her and she would not come back to me. She headed off into the woods and never came back home. I hope your pup is fine and just found something interesting to him and will be back soon.

In my own personal experence,, yes, they do. My german shepherd cross , Shadow, was the most awesome dog, I have ever owned. I had her for 12 yrs and one day she ran off, we searched EVERYWHERe for her. Finally found her lying in the middle of a cow pasture and she wouldnt come when I called her. I went over and got her, brought her home and within 3 days. she ran off again, and we never found her. My vet said, some dogs will run off to die.

Quite the contrary. I think that if a dog is attached to its family, chances are it may tend to stay close by. In your case, I think with your dog being 10 years old, he may have just gotten lost (dogs are not as intuitive as cats when it comes to finding their way home).

Check with you local shelter (call them soon and call them often), talk to as many neighbors as you possibly can, take a bike ride and ask around, post flyers with your dogs picture... you'd be surprised how far a stroll may end up taking them. And before they know it, they are disoriented and "lost".

YES........ They are known to do this. I believe they love their owners so much they do not want to die there in front of them. I had a malamute/wolf hybrid that went off to die and i found him in the woods in front of our house. I brung him home, and he took off again before i got back outside from calling my vet. So YES they will go off to die. I also had a husky that got sick he disappeared when i was going to load him up to go to the vet. He came back a week later feeling fine but very skinny from lack of food, He went off to heal his self is what i think.
