Stick to your guns, kiddo. I know quite a bit about cars (retired engineer with too much time on my hands.
First, both Honda's have better reliability records than the Sonata-but not by much. Consumer Reports rates vehicles on all aspects of reliability. This is based on a survey from cr subscribers (750,000 in 2005). Sonata is probably in the top three in it's class (and there's a bunch in it's class. very reliable, huge number of extras (esc-stability control/abs/side&curtain airbags/excellent on crash tests) AND it's thousands less than honda. overall-an excellent choice. one bit of advice-if you find yourself wanting several options that are standard on the gls and optional on the gl (if that's what they call them) go with the higher trim line. when you sell you may not get anything for the options, but if you got the higher trim line then you will automatically get paid for the options.

I drive a 2001 Hyundai Elantra and I love this car. Your friend might be thinking about the earlier version Hyundai(back in the 1980's when Hyundai were a piece of junk). I have had this car for 2.5 years and it gets me to were I'm going. I have heard and did my own reseach and found Hyundai to have more features then some of the other cars out there. Hyundai is kind off a poor person's car, but if you get a new one it has a great warrenty. I would recommend the Elantra, because I own one. Take a Hyundai for a spin and see what you think of it. You can also visit there website at www.hyundaiusa.com.

Hyundai cars are not crap, consider all the awards from JD Powers and others they have won in recent years. Sonata is a great car, there are a ton of satisfied customers reviews for the 2006 version on edmunds.com and on Yahoo autos. Sonatas and Sante Fe's are made in the US in their new Alabama factory. Hyundai, especially the Sonata, is a win-win deal.

Well, I don't know if they're "crap" or not, but when you compare Hyundai with Honda, well, Hyundai might seem so. And I definitely prefer my diesel Volkswagen Jettas that I bought for my son and myself, and I think my daughter prefers her Honda Accord over any Hyundai, so, that's all the info. I can offer. God Bless you.

Yes Hyundai cars are crap, invest in an Acura, Honda, Toyota, Nissan, or BMW.

Friends don't let friends drive Hyundais.
Just kidding. I think they have improved a lot since they were first introduced. A Huyndai would probably make a good first car.
