You know how sometimes you're soo sure you know something until someone asks you and you suddenly can't remember or get a little confused?

Is this stadium in PORTUGAL or ITALY? Is it the San Siro?If not, what and where is it and what does San Siro mean?

Thanks All!

Thank you very much everyone. I knew of the stadium in Portugal, but I didn't know about the one in Sunderland. Thanks!

there are 2 stadia that respond to the name as mentioned, but the home stadium of sunderland a.f.c is technically "IT" bec. it’s the only stadium that officially bears the name "stadium of light". howev, as already pointed out by the other posters, the name also translates to "estadio da luz" which is the unofficial name of the SL Benfica’s home stadium. officially though, benfica's place is called "estádio do sport lisboa e benfica", meaning stadium of SL benfica, a bit hohum but....: )))

which of the 2 has the “rightful” claim? I think sunderland bec. of the significance. apparently, this stadium is built on top of a coal mine and many a sunderland fan were/are miners and so the name stadium of light is actually in reference to the miner’s lamp! In fact a giant Davy lamp which was first used in this area is placed near the stadium so no one would miss the relevance, lol. there’s also a sign at the gates that says "INTO THE LIGHT", and another one that says "FOR US ALL"....rather nice.

estado da luz, on the other hand, is so called bec. luz is actually the name of the area in lisbon where the stadium stands, and luz of course means light in portuguese. ppl there have taken to calling it simply “the light” which then became “stadium of light”. seems the portuguese have used the name since the 1950's so I suppose they have “prior” claim. but I think sunderland’s story is more inspired so they get rightful claim, imo. lol.

btw, would have to second the_ron on his comments. i had fun looking for the facts and have you to thank for that. we can use more Q’s like this…..: )

There actually 3. The Estadio Luz in Lisbon and the one in Sunderland, which has the English name, Stadium of Light.

But Preston's new (current) stadium was also modelled after the Estadio Luz.

The one that you are referring to is located in Lisbon, Portugal. But the only stadium that has the official name "Stadium of Light" is located in North East England.

Thanks for asking such great questions. I learned something new today. If only there were more like you on this forum.

the Stadium Of Light is located in the north-east of ENGLAND & is the home ground of League Championship side, Sunderland, managed by former Manchester United skipper, Roy Keane.

SL Benfica of PORTUGAL's home ground is also known as the Stadium Of Light @ Estadio Da Luz.

the San Siro in Milan, ITALY is the home ground for both Milan rivals, AC Milan & Internazionale Milan. it is also known as Giuseppe Meazza Stadium, in honour of their famous son who played for both Milan clubs in the 1930's & 1940's
