3 people went to a motel. They paid $10 each and went upstairs. The bellboy carried their luggage. The people were very polite, so when the bellboy went downstairs and told the manager, the manager decided to let them pay $25 instead of $30 altogether.
So he gave the bellboy $5 to give to them. While the bellboy was going upstairs he thought, "You can't split $5 into 3." So he decided he'd give them $1 off each person and pocketed the $2.
Now if he gave them $1 off, they paid $9 each. $9 x 3 = $27. The bellboy pocketed $2. Where has the remaining dollar gone?

If you say part of the $27 the bellboy pocketed, explain why

The faulty reasoning lies in the addition at the end. 3 x $9 does equal $27, but the $2 tip is included in that $27, so it makes no sense to add the $2 to $27 to make $29. They paid $25 for the hotel room, $2 for the tip ($27), and then got $1 back each to make the original $30.

This one is all about selective wording. The two dollars that the bellboy pocketed is part of the $27. This is a really old riddle, but a really good one!!!

$10*3 (people)=$30 (for three people for a night)
$30-$5 (2 for the bellboy and 1 for each customer)= $25 (price actually paid total)
$25 dollars/3 people= $8.33 and 1/3 cents (per person)
The correct equation to model the price of the hotel for the three people is 8.3 repeating (25/3)*3=$25+$2(bellboy)+$3 (from each customer)
The equation is actually a bad model.

did you ever put it this way..... since the total price is now $25, they get a refund of $5.
the bellboy pocket $2 and gave back 3 $1 to the residents, it stills eguals to $5.
so the dollar isn't really missing, its just a mathematical wording problem.....
Now is that 10 points or what.....

If you don't stop asking this I"M GONNA SCREAM!!!!!!!!!!
It's all in the order that you do the math. They pay 25. Bellboy gives them 3 and keeps 2. It's 30 dollars! IT's not hard!

after hard thinking and discussion with all my friends and adult aqquantinces, along with a few teachers, we have come to the the conclusion that the missing dollar is with the manager. He gave the bellboy 5$ when he should have given him 6$ because you can't divide 25$ equally between the 3 people.
That was a very good question, I enjoyed it, and would like to know if my answer was correct.
P.S. Please put me as best answer, I really need the points, me and my friends are in a contest!!! =)
