This is very nice of you. First see if you can find a DD214 he might have registered it with your local clerk if not, go to http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/get-service-records.html then you can request it on line at their web page; fax it or write them. If after you receive your DD214 you need awards and medals download a Form SF 180 Requests Pertaining to Military Records, http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/replacement-medals.html complete it and send to one of the following:

Bureau of Naval Personnel (Navy, Coast guard and Marines)
Liaison Office Room 5409
9700 Page Avenue
St. Louis, MO 63132-5100

National Personnel Records Center (Air Force)
Air Force Reference Branch (NRPMF)
9700 Page Avenue
St. Louis, MO 63132-5100

National Personnel Records Center (Army)
Medals Section (NRPMA-M)
9700 Page Avenue
St. Louis, MO 63132-5100

Best of luck. Thank-you and God Bless you and the Southern People.

You can obtain most of the needed information easily from the OMPF (Official Military Personnel Files) of the National Personnel Records Center (Military Personnel Records). For the most part it is as easy as completing and mailing the Standard Form (SF 180). The form includes the miling addresses for the correct center to send the form to. For example, if your fatehr was in the Gurad or Reserve, those records are in a different location than Active Duty records.

The form is here: http://www.homeofheroes.com/valor/standard_form_180.pdf

You can also initiate a record search if he was active duty here: http://www.archives.gov/research_room/vetrecs/

The information you can get is: Copies of most military and medical records on file at NPRC, including the DD Form 214, Report of Separation (or equivalent).

First, based on your details I am assuming your father was in the Army. To get details regarding his service, you must contact the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis, MO. Make sure you have all his specific information, they will need it to track the records (Social Security Number (SSN), date of birth (DOB) etc.). Any additional info would also be helpful in the search such as point of induction, places of service, rank etc. Also, be prepared that this process will take some time (maybe as long as a year - keep your head up!). Best of luck.

There are dozens of sites on the computer that will give you tremendous amounts of info.on the Korean war. I am guessing, by the info you are giving that he was in the army.
I was in mine warfare in Korea, and I found my captain by using these search engines. The last time I heard from him was in 1955 and in 2002 I located him thru the Internet.
