Start in one corner of the basement and make piles for donation, disposal, and dispersal (things that will go to other rooms in the house). Wait until the piles are sizable before making a trip to relocate them. For things that are going to stay in the basement, put like items together. Sorting your stuff into categories will make it easier to decide what should be saved. Use same-sized, same color containers for a more uniform look.

I always watch these organization shows. They tell you to take like 4-5 boxes, label them and organize your stuff from there. Also throw out the stuff you rarely use, even if it's hard to part with..You need the space right? So look at the the stuff you use on a regular basis and stuff that just sits and determine which you will keep! You have to make a choice in order to be organized, you will have to let go of some things!

In my basement i have a work room, a big room that my dad built for the house that has the boiler. I built a shelf and i have these metal things that shelve stuff and i organize things on there, i have a whole bunch of stuff under the stairs(my boiler is near the stairs so it's included in the room.) you could do something like that or go to wal-mart or ikea and buy those big bins and put stuff in them and stack them.

You do not say if the basement is finished or not. Either way, please draw a rough plan of your basement with the dimensions of external walls; locate furnace, columns etc. Add the dimensions of existing rooms (if any). List the best uses for available space--bedroom for guests, office, washroom, laundry, storage, and so on.
In your storage area allocate space for the storage of: extra groceries, maybe extra fridge and freezer, out of season clothes, sporting goods, maintenance and repairs stuff--tools and such, and anything else you can think of. Do you want storage on open shelves or in the cabinets behind doors? Think it through and then place the ideas on your drawing. Observe messy areas of your home. Mess tells us of a need for more storage space. Is the basement storage o.k. for these things? If yes, add them to your list. Do other people need extra storage--kids, parents, and so on? Add it to your list and allocate space for it on your drawing. It is good to allocate space for the stuff to go to garage sale, or charity, so everybody can put there the unused items. It is helpful to spend time organizing things on your drawing made in pencil so you can erase and change it as often as you need. Once you finished with the list of the things to store, you can sort out your storage priorities and accessibility you want and then begin to implement your plan. And remember that the storage needs do change often, so allow for flexibility in your design, but don't worry about making a mistake. Good luck!

Decide what the separate areas will be. One area should be for the washer/dryer, etc. Another area might be for a kids' play room, another area for storage, etc. Get rid of what you don't need. Recycle, give away, or sell.
