I'm in NY and if it works the same way in both of our states and you are talking about regular medicaid (not the spend down program that you pay into) then it usually covers all medications completely, without co-pays. It is the one aspect of "the system" that is actually extremely helpful. I can't think of a single medication that I was prescribed and it didn't cover (and I've been on a bunch of them, especially the psychiatric ones.)

Sometimes the ins. co. wants you to use a cheaper medication that is similar to the ones your MD has prescribed. If thats the case you will have to change. usually they cover everything except insulin syringes. Co pays are normally 1.00 for gerneric, and 2 or 3 dollars for brand, or the more expensive ones. Children always get their medication free no matter what it is. hope this helps

It probably depends which state you are in. If they will not cover it right away, they will most likely do it with a PA (prior authorization - which means your doctor will have to fax over paper work to the Medicaid office to convince them to pay for the medication). Then, you will pay your regular co-pay. In my state, the co-pay is $3.
