With equal Armys to command it would be very close. Same general style. Attack Attack Attack. The only real advantage would be to Patton who did study Lee's tactics and every other general from the time of the civil war to Patton's present at West Point and an extra 100 years of "lessons learned" that Lee wouldn't have had. Playing chess or checker probably an even draw.

Are you aware of Pattons ties to teh war; Lee and and Stuart? I know you are not camparing the two as there is no comparison or anyone that has or ever will close to Marse Lee.
A great-uncle, Waller T. Patton, perished of wounds received in Pickett's Charge during the Battle of Gettysburg. Another relative Hugh Weedon Mercer was a Confederate General.Dying at the Battle of Opequon (the Third Battle of Winchester), Patton's grandfather left behind a namesake son, born in Charleston, West Virginia when it was still part of Virginia. The second George Smith Patton (born George William Patton in 1856, changed his name to honor his late father in 1868) was one of four children. Graduating from the Virginia Military Institute in 1877, before taking up a career as an attorney, Patton's father served as the first city level District Attorney of Pasadena, California and the first mayor of San Marino, California. It is rumored that Patton's mother kept paintings of Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson in their living room; Patton admired them as she read to him from her rocking chair. He is quoted as saying, "Until I was old enough to know better, I thought those were portraits of God the Father, and God the Son."
God Bless Marse Lee, You and the Southern People.

Actually, I think Patton was Lee reborn. But seriously, Lee lost because he faced an enemy that outnumbered him by large amounts, had more supplies, and was willing to throw its men into a meat-grinder to win. (like Cold Harbor, worse losses for Union than Pickett's Charge was for the Confederacy). Honestly, if they had the same types of forces, and training to use them, It would come out about even in my opinion. Both relied on the men under them for strategy and ideas, which they then applied as they saw fit. It would be an interesting battle though. After all, they were both geniuses in their times.

Patton would win. Patton won a war where Lee lost a war for the South.

Patton would win hands down.
Lee didn't have a major victory in the last 2 years of the civil war. Patton rarely faced defeat.

What distinguished Lee was * his ability to psychologically size up whomever the commanding general was on the Federals side - and use that understanding in deriving his campaign strategies * his recognition that he would have to be tactically aggressive in the field to help compensate for the South's resource scarcities. * his ability to instill (whether it was his creation or not) near god-like reverence from his men. This was not so in early 1862 -- but by the end of 1862 it certainly was so. * without Jackson, Lee's lack of tactical skills were laid bare (see his blunders at Gettysburg). In the strategic sense, he was far above the others, but overwhelming resources beat him, no matter how great a strategic general he was. Regarding Jackson, his talent was on the tactical level, leading from the front....which ultimately was his undoing, being shot by North Carolina infantry at Chanclorsville (sp). I doubt their faith in God made them better generals.

Lee, he knew the consequence of giving up States Rights and bending over for the federal government. Anybody who thinks the civil war was about slavery needs to open a history book.
