Hello! I am writing an essay about why the essay is so bad, and I was wondering if there was a different way for teachers to see if the student understands the learning material besides making us write essays.

Ironic I know...an essay about why essays are evil.

Well lesse, My topic is about why essays are really just a torture device for students. I need more information to prove my point and that essays are supposed to be used to express the author's veiwpoints on a particular subject. However it is sad that teachers nowadays are teaching their students that an essay is like a report.

Thank you, all of your ideas are already helping me. I don't really think essays are that evil. I mean they are, but I just don't think they should be forced to write on a certain topic if we aren't really that interested in it. If i really didn't like essays, it would be Facts on Why Essays are Evil and not An Essay of Why Essays are Evil.

There are other ways of assessing understanding of some material other than essays, but it depends on the material. An essay is a well understood method and has been around so long that it is considered rather dependable. In some classes assignments can be more practical, but they would almost always involve writing. Use of media, in class discussions, class presentations, peer reviews, journals, doing abstracts of articles, case studies, role plays, designing web pages, preparing study guides, etc. all lend themselves to different types of material.

I hope these thoughts are of some help. However, I think the essay is rather timeless and isn't going to go away. :)

First of all, essays are not "evil". Essays can be very informative depending on the writer. Maybe what your teacher means is "what makes an essay bad?"

The most crucial thing for any essay is a THESIS STATEMENT. If the thesis does not follow from the body paragraphs, then the paper is basically sh*t. The thesis is the MOST crucial part of ANY essay, or ANY kind of paper.

Also, you must have a topic sentence for every paragraph with a closing sentence for each paragraph that ties back to your thesis statement.

In addition, many un-experienced writers write a summary of everything they ALREADY wrote in their conclusions, and that is wrong!! Conclusions should be brief and should leave the reader intrigued.

Transistions are very important. Awkward transitions in paragraph change could make your paper lousy. I learned this from my English1101 professor in college. Great professor, taught me a lot.

Usage of proper word is crucial as well.

I'm not sure if this answered your question, but I tried.

Essays are one of the few indications of what you have going on upstairs. What you right will likely be meassured in comparison to your peers, so throw in some really obscure stuff that your teacher emphasized in class discussion. What you can communicate about a subject is gradeable. Write a straight-up essay and give your teacher what she wants, so she can give you the grade you want. Then everyone can go home.

The concept of an essay about writing essays is not original. Its tired. Do not write such a thing for a college admission essay either. Write it at your own peril if you must, you have been warned.

Someday you will love essays. You have to edit other people's writtings at work and feel good about yourself, and how well you can write.
