I think it's very wrong but I think it was more for his family than it was a reward for his service.

IDK about any particular severence package, but if TH was working under an actual contract with the denomination, they may have had no choice but to give him the severance package. Think of it as a business version of a pre-nup: if the executive is fired for any reason, they HAVE to provide him with a certain financial settlement, so he can provide for his family while he is looking for another job.
That way, his wife and kids don't starve, or do without medical insurance, etc.
Does TH deserve a good solid boot in the rear? You betcha! Should his wife and children go without because of what HE did? NO. They are already suffering enough as it is.

It says that they are forgiving and generous, and that all sin is covered by the blood.
If they'd done anything less, you'd call them hypocrites, so evangelicals can't win either way.

I think it says the evangelicals are willing to give him the opportunity to overcome his sins and deal with his problems. I think it shows a great amount of love for a man who has so obviously betrayed everyone.
I don't think it is a reward for doing wrong, I think it is a reward for having affected the lives of so many and they are showing him their love for him.

the christian community has been doing this exact same thing for years--all it says is that they are never going to change--besides, Haggard has an innate ability to receive packages

That package wasn't from Evangelical Church. It was a welcome gift from the Catholic Church.
