I had braces not too long ago, and yes, they do hurt at first. Eventually the pain will fade away, but the worst part's the braces catching the inside of your cheek ("ouch" doesn't really cut it, does it?).
You may want to stick to soft food for a while, and work up to more solid foods over time. Avoid hard or crunchy foods and foods like peanut butter or caramel.
As for the wax, you pinch off a small piece about half the size of a pea, roll it into a ball, and then press it onto the offending bracket with your finger, making sure the wax covers the hook. Making sure the wax stays in place, carefully remove your finger.

I just got my braces on a few monthes ago and it hurt like heck! The best thing to do is take advil or something like that. A liquid works best because you dont have to chew it. Wax works really well, all you have to do is make sure your mouth is dry, and then put it on the bracet that is bothering you, then it won't hurt when it rubs against your mouth or something. And has solid food goes , i had to learn to swallow stuff whole. In a few days it will start feeling better i promise. O yeah another thing that works really well is Brace relief, it comes in a really tiny little bottle, and just a little dab will numb your whole mouth. It is made by infalab I bet if you ask your dentist, or orthodontist for it he should have it or at least be able to tell you where to get it, and if you got a brace kit it might even be in there. well thats all the advice i can really offer you o 1 more thing remember to take really good care of your braces because if you don't you will have to have them on longer. well hope i helped.

Your teeth will ache for the first while. This is normal. Try to eat soups and softer foods for a while until you get used to them. As far as the wax goes, if you have any spots that are rubbing on your mouth, break off a piece of wax an put it on the bracket that is rubbing. Just remember that it will all be worth it in the end.

i currently have braces and even though ive had them for about 3 months they still hurt.
you wont need the wax all the time, its just to help you get used to the braces poking your lips & gums all the time, directions:
scrape some from the little chunk, as much as needed to cover the spot that is irritating, then apply as needed.
mashed potatoes and soup are great since you cant chew.
Drink stuff thats COLD! it help with the pain. and pop some asprin.
good luck, hope this helps!

Ibuprofen works really well for the headaches caused by the teeth moving. Also, the wax is used on the metal pieces of the braces that are cemented to your teeth in order for you to keep your lips, gums and insides of your mouth from being ripped apart while you are getting used to them. Just take a small dab {hey ENS!} and put it on the metal piece, and press down so it squishes on. Good luck.

1. You use wax on spots that are poking your gums.
2. I was able to live with the pain of braces but my friend said taking Tylenol numbs the pain slightly.

well here's my tip, i know it may sound really dumb, but you gotta start eating foods that are at least somewhat hard, dont keep eating soft food and "babying" it. if you do that then each time u get ur braces tightened, the pain will last longer. i know it may sound dumb but beleive me...i had braces for 3 yrs, u gotta do this. i mean not right away b/c its only been a day, but maybe within in the next couple of days....

Eat soft food for a few days, the pain will be gone in 4 or 5 days. Hopefully in time for thanksgiving. :)
