In spanish classes that aren't in Spain or spanish speaking countries, a lot of what we learn (grammar, vocabulary etc.) isn't how they say things in spanish speaking countries. My best friend is a spanish major and studied abroad in Spain and she confirmed this, saying that they have different words for different meanings, just like how they use the form "vosotros" a lot. I think te amo and mi amor both mean I love you and my love to us, but maybe to a native speaker they have a different way of saying it. I still think it's grammatically correct, though.
