I was watching Americas Most Wanted, and I want to make sure I know what to do if I were to ever get in a situation where I needed to use self defense...what should I look for or try to do?

The best defense is a good offense. Pay attention to your surroundings, turn your head and look around you. Don't walk past a male very closely and avoid groups of males.
When you walk around a corner or a vehicle, keep several feet between you and the object. If someone is hiding behind it, it gives you a second or two longer to react.
Do NOT carry a firearm until you are familiar with how to use it AND you have made the decision to kill someone. They are not for display, if you pull it out -- use it -- or they will take it.

However, you can use any hard edge (book, package, etc..) as a blunt weapon. You can use any pointed object (ink pen, nail file, etc...) to JAB with. An umbrella with a sharp point (you can even file it a little) works really well. But remember, JAB -- don't swing.

The goal is to survive. Give up items and money. But do not let them take you to another location. (going limp is a defense)
Again, the goal is to survive---regardless of what happens, survive.

Read "Armed & Female" by Paxton Quigley. She was a gun control lobbyist until she did the research and realized that it is all about not being an easy target, "Not An Easy Target" is her 2nd book, by the way. Being armed and confident of your ability to kick some serious *** is communicated in your attitude, demeanor, even the way you move. That usually makes you an unattractive target. Criminals go for the easy mark.
When it comes down to the wire, the Police can't be there at the same instant that you are in danger. I totally agree with the guy that said to arm yourself. Target practice is enjoyable too. Become totally comfotable with your weapon so that using it is second nature,
Make sure that the bad guy is the one who ends up regretting his attempt, not you for not being able to defend yourself while you hope the Police are able to arrive before you are harmed. Criminals are actually more afraid of a civilian with a gun than an armed Police Officer.
Also reccomend reading "The Gift Of Fear" by Gavin De Becker, easily readable & a favorite amongst law enforcement for it's practical & informative way of honing your instincts and keeping yourself out of harm's way as much as possible. Good for you for taking a pro-active stance on this issue!
Oh, and look into a class called "Model Mugging", where you learn and practice how to fend off an attacker. It's the repeated practice in any self defense method that is so important, teaches you to overcome the "freeze" reaction that is instinctive reflex for most people when suddenly faced with an attacker.

The best self defense against being a victim is prevention. Don't put yourself in a situation to be attacked. If you are really worried, enroll in a self defense class sponsored by a police department or martial arts school. Believe it or not, yelling "fire" at the top of your lungs is quite effective. If the person is robbing you with a gun, then give up your purse; it's replaceable, you're not.

There are a number of things that you can do. First, never walk all the way up to a car that stops; stay at least ten feet away and talk to someone if they stop and ask for directions or help. If they start to get out run away from the car. Second never walk or park next to vans or pick-ups at the mall or store; it is very easy for people to pull or force you into one without any one seeing them or you. Third; do anything to keep them from getting you into that car. That includes poking them in the eyes with your fingers gathered around your thumb to a point, kicking them in the groin or shin, screaming, biting, stomping on their feet, etc. Once they have you in that car your odds for survival go way down so do what ever it takes and avoid situations that might make you vulnerable to that. Be leery of strangers approaching you and also choose your friends even more wisely. Half the sexual assaults in the US are committed by people the victims know.

There are only two effective self defense options. Use of pepper spray and use of a gun. Pepper spray is for day to day use. Gun is for high risk situations. If you aren't willing to train and use these the chances that you will be successfully raped, robbed and/or murdered if you are ever in this situation is about 100%.

Self defense vs crime is a myth and a pretty damn dangerous one. Instead, what you should be focussing on is evading and escaping and, most of all, prevention. A good site with info on this is here:

Depends on what you mean by attacked, if it is like rape or murder go for the balls, once they are taken out they will go down, but ALWAYS AS A LAST RESORT. Also you will need to consider your surrounding environment and the local laws about self-defence. If you have objects lying around dont be afraid to arm yourself with them as long as it is legal and if you hold a weapon use it OR IT WILL BE USED AGAINST YOU.

OF course this is always a last resort if you cannot avoid it or run away, an if it is merely a theft let them get away with it, whats more important your $ or your life?

You need to take a self-defense class, even if it's just a K.I.S.S. class it will help.

The eyes are the most vulnerable. Two inches above the knee on both sides of the legs. It's to easy to block a blow to the groin.

Girl, forget all you heard

In a situation like that, you just do anything that comes to mind to stay alive, even if it means sitting still and not saying a word.

It is far worse to survive an attack and live feeling guilty because you forgot to use your knee or the mace.

Keep your eyes on your attacker while turning your body sideways. Your shoulder should point at them.

Raise your hands (Open palms, fingers together.) so that the hand nearest the attacker is at your face level and your other hand is positioned in front of your chest. You can now use your hands to block if he tries to strike you.

Shout loudly and sharply. “Baaack Offff!!!”

If your attacker stops or moves away, good. Stay alert and get to safety. If they continue to move towards you...wait until they’re in range, and, using the leg nearest the aggressor, kick them at or below the knee. Kicking higher is too easy to block or grab, and while painful when it succeeds, is not disabling.

I learned from the academy to use your natual weapons. If you are short like I am (5 feet) instead of trying for the crotch or the eyes, go lower. Take a foot and strike them in the side of the knee cap. They will go down fast, giving you time to get away.
