Two supplements may be useful in reducing the intensity and frequency of attacks. The herb feverfew, one of the most popular migraine remedies, has anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties.
5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan), an amino acid derivative, helps boost serotonin levels in the brain, and has been found to prevent migraines as effectively as some prescription medications.
Both may need to be taken daily over several months for maximum benefit. 5-HTP should be used with caution when using certain antidepressants, called SSRI drugs.
Other Self-Care Remedies -
Holding an ice pack (or even a bag of frozen vegetables) against your forehead can bring temporary relief--the cold numbs the pain and also helps contract dilated blood vessels.
Many migraine sufferers obtain relief by resting in a dark, quiet room with an ice pack or cold compress against the forehead.
Self-massage with rosemary oil is a migraine reliever. Using a circular motion, massage your temples, then repeat in the hollows at the sides of your eyes, behind your ears, and over your neck.

I suffer from Migraines occasionally, but not to the point that I need a prescription (I only have maybe 6 a year). What works best for me is to lie down in a dark room, with a cold compress over my eyes and forehead. Keep it as quiet as possible too. I try to sip herbal (usually chammomille) tea, with honey. Some say to drink caffeine, but for me it aggravates the headache even more, hence the chammomille tea. Its caffeine free. I have also heard that a prescription called Imitrex works wonderfully though I have never tried it personally. Hope this helps.

The usual jazz-dark room, pain killer, cold compress and get this- I have my husband squeeze my head, yes, that is correct. It helps me an unbelievable amount. Though I have not had one last longer than a day and a half. I have even stretched my toddlers toboggan over my skull and the pressure relieves the sharp icepick in the brain feeling several degrees.

I take Amerge and fiorinal. I take extra magnesium, ginger and petadolux. You can get lavender oil and peppermint oil and put a drop or two of each in olive oil and rub it on your neck, unless the smell bothers you. I also go for acupuncture. It helps some, but not all the way.
Migraines are horrible.
