As far as getting along with the instructor (the class is almost certainly led by a TA or similar, not an actual professor) , participation will definitely help. Nothing feels worse than trying to guide a class and having them stare at you like a herd of comatose sheep every time you ask them something. Instructors are always grateful for a student who listens to, thinks about, and responds to what's going on in class.

Your campus may have a writing center that can provide you with additional help. If not, find some friends who are good writers and ask them to read over your assignments and offer feedback. You may even ask to read some of their assignments to get an idea what a well-written paper looks like.

Make good use of your instructor's office hours--for this or any other class. If you have questions about any of the comments you receive on papers, be sure to follow up with the instructor. If you receive a poor grade on something, ask the instructor if you can submit a re-write. Even if it won't improve your grade, it can lead to better grades in all the other classes you need to write papers for. And it will certainly send the message that you are doing everything you can, which in itself can affect your grade.

Do all of your homeworks. Go over the materials for the next class BEFORE showing up for the class. If any questions, write them down and if not answered by the end of the class, go ask.

Make use of your professor's office hours. He is there to answer your questions. Sit in the front row and pay attention. When the professor stresses a point, be sure to mark it down on your notebook. Those stress point will show up on your next test.

Participate. Ask questions. Stay on top of all of your assignments. Ask questions. Participate.
