So, im most likely going to be joinging the Marines and for Recon. I'd like to know what different things that recon does besides getting intel, what kinds of weapons they use, what there main purpose is, and if there mainly only used in war time.

HHC 1st BN 35th Inf RCN PLT 3rd (Bastard) BDE 25 Inf 19 July 1966-2Feb 1968........I apologize for not being a Marine son....but I'll try to answer your question. I actually staid beyond my tour, I started to like it.....no explanation. I got there early on in that mess, which was a good thing, I &II CORP set up a hasty RECONDO school near NhaTrang, nine(9) weeks, our instructors were mostly the advisors that the Kennedy Admin. had sent there in 64-65. The only qualifacations, were at least five jumps, they wern't real big on PT, we had a lot to learn about the gooks, what the hell, they only had 120 years on us......they tryed to teach us 120 years of combat skills in nine weeks and three days. To give us an idea of what we were up against, they took us to this place called Quang Yang pass,it's a route out of the mountains to the port in Qui Nhon. I'll try to make it short. It was in the early fifties, the French had just surrendered, to, at that time, was the Viet-Minh. It was a narrow, twisting, two sidewalk size road, cut into the side of that mountain. Over the edge was strait down. It was the only way out of the country, for the French to get to ships. Remember, they had surrendered, the gooks ambushed them, stopped the lead vehicles, blocked the retreat......it was a turkey shoot. Just like when we were there, they didn't have much for weapons, old French stuff, British Enfields, not a lot of automatics, they pushed big boulders on them, hot oil, burning coals, they damm near wiped out three(3) Divisions of French soldiers. The trees still don't grow there, that has to be one of the scary places on the planet. Needless to say, these guys we had for instructors were ex-spooks, SOG, I payed attention to everything.....I wouldn't be surprised, if some of the stuff we got, added new chapters to the Recon Handbook. So, in the beginning, we only had one mission..........hunt gooks. Early in 67, we started doing our real job, we were undermanned, but who wasn't, we had twenty(20) guys in the platoon, we didn't go out full strenght as much. We'd operate squad size, some time, five(5) guys, we had stuff though, two(2) M-60's, everyone had ammo to carry, two(2) M-79's, that was before they had that fancy stuff underneath the 16, I carried a Steven-Savage 12 Ga. pump, every other time we would get This Black kid....Jefferson.....had one of the last M14- E2, that guy could put out some lead, I didn't mind carring four(4) or five(5) magazines for him. Well, there you go, maybe I've given you some idea, as you can see......sometime we were sent just to start fights, so the brass could see what you're up against.......that's Recon..........DON'T MEAN NOTHIN....WHHOOO....AAAHHHHH

When I was in the Marines the Recon people came by during the aditional training we received after Boot Camp. I don't know if they still doing that. Anyway, the one requirement they ask for is a perfect 300 pft score. There might also be a height and weight requirement but I'm not sure. They're very elite, just like those selected for sniper school, so very few Marines get to that level.

They work all the time not just during wartime. But most of the time they're training, not doing stuff like you see in the movies.

I dont know for sure what you would do because I am Navy but I want to say good luck. I would also like to point out that there is alot of people who vote thumbs down on anyone who is in the military or wants to join. There is no reason the good responses should have thumbs downs. A few answers are just stupid.

Recon is forward scouts, in theatre its intel. They use standard issued weapons and no military members have use only in war outside of combat they will find something for you to do and you will train alot. PT clean and clean some more. good luck
