This is a rather bizarre but completely serious question. It deals with my opinion about the taste of bananas that I've yet to find a single person to agree with me.

They taste like glue! Or more precisely, they taste like glue smells.

Older readers may remember the Airfix model airplanes we used to buy as kids. Well, remember the little tubes of clear glue they used to come with - the real strong smelling stuff? Well, bananas taste like that glue smells.

This is my last hope in finding someone who actually agrees with me.

Bananas when ripening give off ethylene oxide gas. The way to force -ripen a banana is to enclose it in an atmosphere of ethylene oxide, and this is routinely done in the UK to get green bananas shipped into the country from growing areas in to a condition ripe enough for the shops.

What you can 'taste' is naturally occuring ethylene oxide gas, and a high quantity of vitamins and minerals which occur naturally in bananas.

This is why the banana is such a good indicator of the fact that we largely experience 'taste' through our noses.

The idea of something tasting like a smell is odd but I kind of understand what you're on about. I remember the glue well and in some cases bananas do have an unexpectedly astringent flavour on the back of the teeth but that glue taste doesn't spring to mind though, at a push it just might. A more common experience for me is that something, peppermint tea for example, has a smell which is alarmingly let down by the taste.

This is rather a weird question but i guess at least if this is an issue for you, you have come to the right place.
But my opinion is that , No they don't taste like glue, if they do why do you keep eating them? In Australia were having a Banana 'drought' and when i just went to Thailand i went Banana crazy. So i have tried Banana's from many countries and have found non that taste like glue. Sorry

No not really except banana essence which i presume is made from bananas. Mangoes on the other hand taste like oranges. (When my mother was young during the war they could not get bananas because of the shipping dangers so they used turnip, flavoured with banana essence instead of banana. Must have tasted horrible but that was all they had.)

If bananas are not ripe sure they will taste like glue. However bananas that are properly ripened are delicious! But if bananas are spoiled they are terrible! Make sure the bananas are a good yellow colour no green on
them.. a little brown is ok but not the black colour.. usually black means spoiled

Oh in case you don't know some modeling glue
does include banana as an ingredient in their glue so it doesn't harden too fast!

here's a desert recipe I like take potatos
slit them fill the slits with mashed banana
pour syrup or put brown sugar on them and bake in oven! You might want to top each potato with a Cherry after the potatos are baked! ( recipe came from Readers Digest..
I shortened it a bit)

'Bananas taste different at different stages of ripeness. Apparently you are eating yours on the semi-green side when they are more starchy and less sugary. I think I know what you mean, but I'm not going to agree with you! LOL

PS This thought just occured to me, they "gas" bananas to help them ripen quicker. I wonder if perhaps this is what you might be tasting. Try an organic banana at the same level of ripeness and see if you get the glue taste as with a regular banana.

Bananas might taste like glue to you because the odor of isoamyl acetate (also known as banana oil) is banana-like. Isoamyl acetate, in addition to being used as a flavoring, is used as a solvent and may have been a component of the glue you remember. Since smell and taste are so closely associated, the banana might smell (and taste) like a glue containing isoamyl acetate.

I guess I'm too young to know about the Airfix model planes... but I do understand where you're coming from. Bananas have always had a very glue-y taste to them for me, and I guess for you too. So no, you're not crazy.

That is really wierd! I have never heard of anything like it.
Wonder how they taste that way to you? Obviously the glue smell is very strong, but the taste of a banana is mild.

Good luck on this one.

Think maybe you smelled too much of that glue

But seriously in the old days I do remember scented glues (before they figured out people were sniffing glue for kicks)
