Government is not allowed to stop cults (all religions are cults), which is the major flaw in the U.S. Constitution. Any group that gets an unfair advantage over other groups ALWAYS abuses that advantage. When religion is allowed to use the coercive power of the state to shove their god down every ones throat, they must be marginalized or destroyed.

In the past most government funded or supported attacks on religous groups were done covertly. Interpol for example was
a major source for circulating false information to various "police" organisations internationally. It was exposed and now no longer exists. The CIA and it's enforcement arm the FBI in the U.S. lost their info source and justification for these covert actions.
The Freedom of Information Act was the major reason for the demise of this kind of activity.
The fight for recognition of the right to religious freedom that is
part of most western countries basic charters or constitutions
has now prevailed.
Cult Awareness Network in the U.S. which engage in criminal abductions to "deprogram" individuals for large sums of money
no longer exists. Many of it's "organizers" are now in prison.

As a result governments are a lot more wary of attacking or "controlling" religious freedom overtly or covertly. Unfortunately their redefinition of the word "cult" as something "dangerous" remains in the society altho not in the dictionary.

Good luck on finding any source that will openly admit to this kind of blatent interference with individual rights and freedoms.

The official stance : Chuch and State are seperate in the West
and therefore do not control eachother.
