i have a niece who is 12 years old. her name is valerie. she got herself a "boyfriend" for the first time about 2 months ago. she's known him since she was 3 years old (his name is travis), and they have always been best friends. apparently over time he grew a crush on her, asked her out, and she said yes. travis is a sweet boy. when they were just friends, they were very very close. he'd kiss her on the cheek and hug her all the time (but apparently that didn't mean anything). now that they're "going out" they are very affectionate with each other. i first thought it was just puppy love, but, is it possible at the age of 12 to really have a relationship?? the two of them are very bright. and are both very mature (meaning intelligence-wise) for their age. so....can this be??

I would hope that they are going to wait on sex, and in this day and age12 is kinda young. I don't know how familiar you are with the NBA, but Dwayne Wade from the Miami Heat team is married with one child to his middle school sweet heart so anything is possible. It's just times have changed so much that you wonder are they getting close because of how that affection from each other makes them feel therefore making them like the lust they have for each other.

Kids are starting sooner. I'd talk to her and find out. Does she know that she can get pregnant at her age? I had a neighbor who was only 14 and her husband was 15 when their first son was born, They did at some point get married and had 5 son's by the time she was 26 & he was 27 years old!

Don't get hung up on the question of whether it's a "real" relationship or whether their feelings are "real". If it feels real to them, that's all that matters. Just be willing to lend adult support and answer any questions your niece has. Stay interested in the relationship without being judgmental or snoopy.

Not a good idea...
Seperate them until they are older.
