I'm 20 and have been thinking about getting a small tattoo somewhere on my back or calf. However, I don't really want a butterfly or flowers or a typically "feminine" tattoos. My tastes tend towards the off-kilter, literary, or esoteric. Any suggestions? Pictures would be appreciated

i'm twenty too and have been searching for a meaningfull and unique tattoo. i suggest you get a tattoo of cherry blossoms.

yes, they are feminine being flowers, but i discovered that they are japan's national flower symbol. it's called sakura in japan and appear in spring but die shortly after its blossoms show. it represent the transiency of life- that like the sakura, "life is beautiful, but fleeting."

it may be pretty but still tough especially when you get to know it's meaning. personally, this is what i'll be getting for myself. below is a website you can search for great tattoo art and designs. use the keywords "cherry blossom tattoo" "sakura" to get see pics of a tattoo.

Don't take advice from people who have no idea who you are. Ask yourself what you really like, what you know you will continue to like, and whether or not you will be content with your tattoo until the day you die.

I, nor anyone else on this website can tell you what you should get, because I am guessing that the majority of the people here have no clue who you are, or what you are truly about.

I am not saying this because I am against tattoos, because I have a fairly large tattoo of my own, but because I have gotten a tattoo that didn't mean much to me, and had to design a meaningful tattoo around it.

My suggestion, think about who you are, where you have been, where you are going, and if you want suggestions, ask your friends, they know you better than any of us do.

You should get something that symbolizes you, the way you are, and what you're into - not some generic tattoo. You say you're literary - what a short phrase from your favorite book, in a nice type? That would be pretty unusual. But whatever you do, don't get tattooed on your lower back... if you ever have kids, you'll have problems getting anesthesized.

My daughter (celebrating her 30th birthday this year) and I got matching tattoos in July on the inside of our right ankles. They are of a sea turtle with just the fins lightly colored in. On the back of the turtle is a Celtic spiral representing earth, sea and sky. The turtle is a symbol of long life, and the shared tattoos are symbolic to us of our connection. Find a representation for yourself with which you will be happy every day for the next seventy years and you can't go wrong.

I don't think that spot is particularly feminine, honestly. For something like that the small of the back might be the most appealing place to put it, or maybe the wrist or ankle.

nothing. trust me, no matter what it is, if you take someone elses advice on a tattoo you will regret it. no matter how much you want one do not jump at the first design that catches your eye. yes i know its cheesy to say but it will be with you for the rest of your life. and yes if you didnt like it you could pay around $1000 to have it lasered off. and then youd be stuck with a beautiful burn mark, or light colored patch of skin where the laser hit your skin. the only right choice is to wait until your are 100% sure of what YOU want. not whats cool now, or what your friends think would look good. trust me this is coming from a guy with full arm sleeves. and yes i did make the mistake of taking someones opinion 10 years ago when i got my first tattoo.

think outside the box. most of the girls i know that have tattoos don't have "girly" tattoos. not that they're manly, but they're more fun than anything. for example, i have a tattoo of a skull on my foot, and am working on a backpiece of a koi and sea turtle.
i have a friend who has a bunny rabbit and a space cat on her arms. and one friend with a panda sitting on a tree. check out my tattoo artist's myspace and you can see some of the unique and non girly tattoos he has done.

I have 15 tattoos, and almost every one of them involves stars in some way.

I love how stars look, and they're not too feminine, like flowers would be.

I have some pics on my website... (put it all on one line in the address bar)

I would think an Asian or any other language that uses symbols for words would be cool, just make sure that you know what the symbol stands for:)

Get the Chinese characters for your most cherished value. Or get the "Eye of Horus" (the single Egyptian eye you see in their hieroglyphics) to ward off all evil.
