It depends on what you call "responsible".

There can be a very responsible person of 22 years old, who has just gotten out of college and isn't making a lot of money, and who may still benefit from a little help from parents. In other words, being "responsible" is, to me, a matter of how mature and sensible and responsbile someone is regardless of whether or not they have achieved complete financial independence and security.

Since brains are not completely finished growing until "early- to mid-twenties" (the pre-frontal cortex), and since bones grow until about age 25, I suppose I tend to think of 25 as the age when people are really finished with really reaching maturity.

Some young people like to stay at home and save money or keep going to school so that in the long run they'll reach a better level of security.

I've known kids of five years old who show a remarkable ability to be responsible at certain times.

Your question isn't one that can be answered with an exact age. It depends on your definition of "responsible" (and whether that's the same one other people tend to have) and depends the type of responsbility and maturity you're talking about, etc.

If you're just talking about people who have financial independence, keep their checkbooks balanced, pay their bills, do their own taxes, live on their own, are well established in good jobs, etc., then I think the average age of that, these days, is very often far older than most young people and some parents would hope it would be.
