Stevia isn't an artificial sweetner at all.

There's a lot of controversy surrounding it, because it's a naturally-occuring sweetner, meaning that it's impossible to put a patent on it.

Interestingly enough, stevia was banned in 1991, due to the fact that "toxicological information on stevia [was] inadequate to demonstrate its safety." Stevia supporters, however, claimed that the FDA had violated its own rules, which state that any natural substance used prior to 1958 with no reported adverse effects should generally be regarded as safe.

Many marketers and consumers of stevia believe that the artificial sweetner industry pressured the FDA to ban stevia and keep it out of the United States, for fear that it would cause them competition.

In 1994, the ban was lifted due to the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act, which permitted stevia to be listed as a dietary supplement, but not a food additive.

In 2006, the World Health Organization deemed stevia non-carcinogenic, meaning that it doesn't cause or contribute to cancer. They also found that it can be helpful to patients with hypertension or Type-2 diabetes.

I personally use it almost every day to sweeten my breakfast shakes and my tea. Since it's about 300 times sweeter than sugar, very little is needed, and it lasts a long time.

Hope this helps!

Stevia in green powder my dear is the BEST sweetener there is. Natural and risk free. Stevia only from Natural Food Store that is. I use it all the time. Stevia from regular grocery store I would not even come close of thinking to buy it.
Don't use antything that is artificial or you will pay for it later in your life.

I used Listerine Naturals which has Stevia listed as an inactive ingredient and developed terrible canker sores and swollen tongue/lips. I believe I am allergic to Stevia which is related to ragweed.
