Why does injecting air to your veins causes death?

you have around 120-150 lbs of pressure forcing the blood thru your veins, capillaries, and arteries which if layed out end to end would circle the earth about 1 1/2 times. When the air bubble reaches the heart it messes with this pressure and will kill the person instantly (one minute they are alive the next they are dead no pain at all) I've always said that it would be a great way to execute a criminal instead of spending thousands of dollars on fancy machines to do lethal injections. 10 cents for a syringe inject a air bubble into the arm and presto they are dead!!!!! It does take alot to do it tho.

It's called an air embolus. Acts the same as a clot - blocks the blood to the brain or the heart and causes a heart attact - usually. Knew a doctor once who killed herself that way. Found with the needle still in her arm. Not a pretty sight. It must have taken ages to get enough air in because it takes quite a lot before anything happens. Not the best way to die.

it is called an air embolism. It can cause vein to rupture causing you to bleed out internally. If it goes into your heart it can cause a disrythmia causing heart failure. It does however take a great deal of air to do this about 50 cc's if I remember my corpsmen days. So the little bubbles you see them knocking out of a injection is just hyper vigilant safety.

I once heard that it has to do with the air entering the heart and interfering with the operation of the heart's valves.

once air enters the heart it doesnt know what to do with it.....so ultimately you have a heart attack......
