I'm 14 about to turn 15 next month, and my parents won't let me go to a tanning bed. They keep on telling me it could cause skin cancer. I realize this but honestly I don't care because I've researched statistics that say it's a very rare incident. Spare me the lecture on how bad it is for your skin and please tell me how I can show them that although I'm at a young age, I'm mature enough to make some of my own decisions. I've already tried the fake-a-tan option, and well it always comes out orange or just plain unnatural looking....

I don't know which fake tan you've tried but you should try to spray tan, they use an air brush to put it on. I've had it done and it doesn't turn orange. You need to use a good exfoliating scrub all over your body before you have it done and you cant take a shower for 24 hours after it is done, if there is some orange it normally will wash off when you shower.

You're parents are right. Tanning beds are not safe & are worse than the sun because you're being directly exposed to the rays that cause cancer. There is not such thing as a safe or healthy tan. And, I'm sorry my dear, but you're absoutely wrong about skin cancer being a rare incident, it is the 2nd most common cancer in the US, prostate cancer being the most common. It is rising more steadily everyday, most likely to the use of tanning beds. Sunless tanning is your best option. I think those telling you to lie to your parents or tan behind their backs is repulsive. If skin cancer doesn't scare you, then the wrinkles & leathery skin should, along with the ugly age spots & freckles. By the time your 20s you'll look 36. I'm 40 & I've never tanned in a tanning bed & I consistantly use sunscreen & I don't have a line or wrinkle on my face & my skin is soft & smooth, not leathery & I don't have any splotches, age spots, or freckles. In fact, a Plastic Surgeon thougt I was in my late 20s. Listen to your parents.

If you have tried the fake tan, did you try the bottle bought fake tan at the department store? Or did you go to a tanning salon where they offer the spray on tan? At the salon where I used to tan, the spray on did not come out with the orange glow or the not so natural look. Though, I don't think you should tan, I do have something to offer. Tanning at a salon reduces your risk of getting a sun burn in the natural sun which lowers your rate of getting skin cancer. However, if you tan too often or do get burned while in a tanning bed, you increase your risk. It is not safe to tan everyday but every once in a while can have good effects. When you are in the sun, your body produces Vitamin D. There is no other way for your body to synthesize (to make) this chemical unless you take a multi-vitamin everday. 20 mins of sun a day is good for you and that does include just being outside. So if you do tan, limit your sun exposure when you are outside by wearing sun screen. Hope this helps.

The sad thing about being 14 is that you are still under your parents care--its that they feel its not in your best interest to spend time in a tanning bed--Nothing anyone can say to your parents will change their minds about what they think is good for you--I agree you are mature enough to make your own decisions--and I hope that you are mature enough to see that all they want for you is to be safe because they love you--parents don't protect or decide what they feel is best for their children to make the person mad they decide what they do because they care--I hate to say this but --someday when you have children of your own you will make decisions that they wont agree with BUT you will have made them due to the fact that you love them JUST as your parents do to you--The best part is that you will be on your own someday soon and you then can TAN ALL YOU WANT--So just be patience know your folks love you and they are just trying their best to show it K??

You are absolutely NOT old enough to make decisions of this magnitude. Effects of the sun and tanning beds are "cumulative", they build up in your body over time. If you were to be exposed to UV rays at this age on a regular basis, by the time you're in your 30's or 40's, youd be wishing you had listened to your parents - the voices of experience and wisdom !!! DON'T DO IT !!!

you know, your parents don't really have to know that youre going to a tanning salon. why not just lie to them? just kidding! the truth is that tanning beds are bad for you. you'll find that if you are active enough outside on sunny days, you'll get the healthiest looking tan possible, and a good supply of vitamin d, which you don't get from fake fryers.

Parents are hard to sway. I would say look up a lot of good information online and show that to them. Although, I wouldn't let my kid go tanning at 14 either, be glad they care.

where i used to tan " i own a bed now" you had to be 16 to tan on your own or had your parents consent, its too bad your parents don't know the real facts about how safe tanning in a bed is, most tanning salons have information you can show them to prove to them from very good sources, like doctors how safe it really is in moderation, see if that will change their minds...
