I don't have any children, but I have some friends in this postion. If a father pays his child support every month, should he be required or asked for additional money from the mother???? For example, extra money for back to school, school pictures, dances, sports, etc. You know the extra added expenses or should this be factored into the child support already given?

Child support is for necessities. Pictures, dances, etc. are luxuries. Ask, certainly, but don't demand/require.

Question: If she ever comes out ahead on a particular month, does she send the change back to him?

(I was the child of a dad who ran off on his support obligations until he was tracked down...I am happily married, never in the position of having to pay, and am just thinking what would be fair).

I think it would depend on the figures and who has what in terms of money. If the father is struggling to pay the existing amount, maybe he shouldn't be expected to cover all the extras. If he is kind of comfortable, but the mother is struggling, he ought to cover the extras.

Sometimes there are extras one parent thinks the child should have and the other thinks the child doesn't need - in that case, the parent who is in favor of the extra should pay.

I think people need to be reasonable and fair and consider who is struggling the most, who thinks something she be purchased, etc., and take it from there. Maybe the parents could take turns if covering the extras or else they could go halvsies. It is possible and more healthy for all involved if the parents are reasonable and work together. I don't think there should be hard and fast rules, especially since child support is already in place.

The child support is all he is required by law to pay. Of course it probably isn't enough and if he has extra it would be nice of him to give if needed. It never hurts to ask but dont expect to get xtra either.
