I just move into a new appartment, all the walls are white and it is driving me crazy. When I signed the lease the guy said that i could paint pastells. I don't know what he means by that. I know he means light colors. But what is consitered light. I am into nutral colors. Browns, grays, ets. But I like a little punch of color. I would like to paint the back splash in my kitchen maroon (maybe) I don't want it to be a "pastell" I like richer colors too. I just don't want to get in trouble. I am willing to help paint when i move out (that won't be for years) but I will help. should i paint any color i want or should i stick to the light colors or should i just say screw it and keep the walls white.

i would paint it any colour you want as long as it isnt too extreme,i went to veiw a property once and 2 walls were deep purple and the other 2 a nasty colour green,as long as you pick colours that co-ordinate,i dont see a problem.if you're not planning to leave in the near future.you've got to make it comfortable for yourself, you are the one thats got live there, not your landlord.personally i think too many pastel colours look clinical.neutral colours look lovely, especially brown with cream.

The concern with painting other colors is that he will not be able to cover the brighter colors when you move out. There are several ways around this. For your back slash you can put up a precut piece of drywall that just fits over the original. if you do it right no one will even notice plus painting it is easier because you don't have to tape off and cut in etc. As for the rest of the walls it sounds like you like neutral colors and they are easy to cover too. If you use super paint it goes on with one coat and is easy to cover when you change your mind or move out. Lowe's also have some neat back splashes that are copper chrome etc that are actually plastic ( they look like old fashioned metal back splashes.

if you signed a lease stating that the rules were to only paint pastel colors then you should abide by it. I agree with you, I like bolder colors also. I would ask the landlord and explain to him or her that you are willing to repaint when you move out. depending on how strict the landlord is, you could get kicked out of there for breech of contract. (disobeying the lease you signed)

Sometimes rental properties are open for random inspections by the owners, or landlords. I dont know if this is the case where you live or not.

Hey Honeybun!!

Well I live in a dorm and we are allowed to paint the room any color we want as long as we ask for permission and/or paint the room back to an approved color when we move out! Well, I think you should talk to your landlord to see if he/she has a problem with your desired black spash in the kitchen. Tell the landlord that you are willing to repaint before you move out also! I think any reasonable person wouldn't mind you doing it! Do what makes you happy. White walls are boring and that is no way to live life! Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you are going to be there for YEARS I say paint it how you want it. As long as you paint the walls back to white before you move out (so that the maroon doesnt show through) it should not be an issue.

You're right, "pastel" refers to lighter colors, so I suppose if you wanted to paint your walls some dark color like maroon, it'd be best to do it still maroon, but in a lighter shad. If your landlord says anything about it, you can say that you tried to do pastel and maybe show him what you really had wanted to do and he'll see the difference.

Hmnnmmm....When I have my boarding house,we are allowed to color the wall whatever we want.If I were you,I will choose the light colors. It makes the room brighter and relaxing.Even the room is small,it helps to be organize and clean to someone will look. But dont stick in one color and only light.Try to use dark color for borders if you prefer the light for overall paint.White is very common.....if you have a talent, experiment your own color by mixing the white color to the bright one.Its yours on the quantity you want to add and mix,you are the manager and architect of your room.Mix well until it satisfies you.
