Not that a domestic dog will ever really put in close proximity to a lion, but last we time went to a zoo in Phoenix, a lion turned around and sprayed the zoo-guy with some that smelled hideous. Trying to mark territory or something I guess.

Yes a fox will also spray when it is afraid. I know as one of the animal shelter workers and I were both sprayed while trying to get the injured fox out of the animal control truck to put in my kennel for transport to the wildlife center for treatment.

It's hard to tell about what dogs get into. The other day I was driving down the road and a dog was ROLLING in a dead animal like it was trying to get the smell all over itself.
If you dog has come home smelling funny that could be a thought.

NO!
NOT "spray"!!
But possum,coon,etc. can/will let loose their AG's & REEK!!!
Possum stink is NASTY...but doesn't last long. We've taken HUNDREDS of em. Coon isn't so bad...sorta like musky cat-piss.
'Chuck smells like rotten basements.
Fox scent is most like skunk.
