I ask bc my little cousin asked me to explain what she was seeing at school(i seen simular things when i was still in grade school) where theses kids with so-called low income families got free breakfasts and lunchs but they had brand new phones, jerseys, nike sneakers, parents have new cars,... so on and so forth.

honestly low income families do need that help sometimes (i was in that bracket as a child for a couple years) but there are also those that are flashy and spend money where they shouldn't (ie new cars, cell phones, clothing etc) but you can't help that. personally i don't think that those who are out there and being so flashy or willing to spend thier money on these things, should be getting so much help. it's budgeting and they should do better at it or learn how to, and to me it's like they are taking advantage of the system....really what it all comes down to though, is you can't judge a book by it's cover. i may drive a crappy car and not dress in name brand cloths, but for all you know i'm a multi-millionare...so how do you know any of these people your cousin is asking about are getting assistance? so i think just respect others and really it's no one's business if these kids are getting free meals...everyone needs help sometimes.

How can you judge a child on what there parents do. How many of those children that get the free lunches have crack head parents but have family members that make sure they at least have good cloths and shoes to wear. How many children only get the food that they eat in school from the free lunch. Do people honestly think people want to live poor and be poor? I don't think so. Yes there are people who abuse the system and it's a shame. But for the most part I think we that are more blessed with our knowledge and income and the way we were brought up should reach out to the children. Maybe take a moment and help some needy family instead of standing in judgment. I don't think anyone of us that have should ask why do they wear Nike's, jerseys and have cell phones. Ask yourself what kind of home-life they come from and is there anything you can do to help. Tell your children how blessed they are and not to worry about who has what and why? Not one of us would trade places with a low income family for a pair of Nike's, Jersey or a cell phone...................

I think it is where the 'poor' you are referring to, live. Only some schools have a lunch program and they are usually in 'low income' neighborhoods. But on the other hand, one can see very wealthy people living across the street from so called 'poor' people.
I agree with the guy who suggested compassion, as who's to say that these kids, and they are kids afterall, won't grow up to be a person living in the wealthy areas. Taking any luxury away from them will only help in lowering their morale.
Anyway, in order to know whether they 'deserve' the free lunch and a car, aren't you making a considerably rigid judgement of the poor?

Low income families have difficult lives with few good moments, not a lot of opportunity. Sometimes they attempt to make themselves look better buy spending a little extra money on a status symbol, but most of the time, its an attempt to just hide how bad things really are for them. They deserve our sympathy and help, not our judgement. Please do not believe the myth of the "undeserving poor"; it is an idea put out there by immoral people and it spreads like a cancer through our socity corrupting people's compassion.

Just say no to cynically dismississing the poor. It's a path to evil and sin.

There sure is. It's a very selfish society we live in. Too many people want what they cannot afford and buy it anyway. As far as the ones that are out of control I would put them in the addiction category.
