I last asked a question about how to treat my kitty's ears for ear mite. (read my last question if you would like to get more information) Well I treated them like people had suggested, and now on one of his ears, at the tips, it lookes irritated and sore. What should I do about that. The package says to use for 7 to 10 days. Should I continue the treatment? Did I do it wrong. Thanks for any information.

No, if the ear is irritated and sore do not continue to use the OTC medicine. Mineral oil or castor oil is the best thing to use. It won't irritate. Take the baby to the vet next week and let them give you something that works.

okay I looked at the answers to your last question and most of them were WRONG. First of all, I would not trust the OTC stuff, does not work most of the time. The proper treatment is to put the drops into the cats ears and then massage it in so it works it's way down into the ear canal. Do not apply the stuff with a Q-tip....it wil NOT get where it needs too, and you DO NOT want to be sticking a Q-tip in your cats ear...this can cause a lot of damage if you don't know what you are doing or if the cat makes sudden movements. You do not need to clean the mites out, they should just die in there if the medication works, and you cannot see the mites...they are microscopic. You said the tips now look irrateted...well you should NOT have been medicating the tips of the ear, only in the ear canal. At this point I would take the cat to the vet for proper mite medicine, and let the vet do the initial ear cleaning, and you can be instucted on getting the meds in the ear.

The Walmart stuff was a waste of your money, as are just about all of the OTC "remedies" made by Hartz, etc. The ear mite medication may have irritated his ears. He needs to go to the vet, but until you can get there - get some mineral oil, and an eye dropper. Put a couple of drops in each ear daily, then fold his ear over and massage it in. The mineral oil will smother the live mites as they hatch. And it's cheap! (And yes, it does work! Most of the ear mite medications -even the vet prescribed ones - are not safe to use in kittens under 8 weeks, and may kittens that rescues and shelters get are much younger than that. The mineral oil gets you by until you can use something stronger and more effective on them).

You should never use OTC products or home remedies (if that is waht you did) for ear problems. Ears should not be treated for mites or anything else unless it is specifically diagnosed by a vet as to the exact condition. Doing the wrong treatment can cause serious ear irritations, make infections worse, create infections, do inner ear dammage even cause permanent deafness.
It is unwise to follow diagnostic measures & treatments form the internet..doing so can cause serious harm.

I have long experience with cats, and I don't like Hartz products. Some folks who post on here have cited some web sites about Hartz products and bad experiences. They have been around a long time, but I can't understand why they have lasted.

What has happened is that the chemicals have caused an irritation to the tender skin in your cat's ears. You really do need to call the vet and get him to take it from there. Sorry your kitty isn't doing better.

If you used any type of Hartz product that is your problem, the stuff is lethal!!!! I would stop using it and treat the affected area with an antibiotic ointment. Then consult your vet for something for the ear mites. Good luck!
