Has there ever been a long period of time where religion was a peaceful part of society and not a ruling political party or a part of a discussion of things we hate?

In what way could those of us who believe in a higher power be able to mend past wounds and show society that we can quietly coexist, rather than buck heads in the heat of battle?

To the first question...no.

To the second question (and this is somewhat of a blanket statement to all faiths, and only my opinion):

Stop killing people who have a different faith than yours.
Stop trying to legislate your views of morality.
Stop trying to institute your faithbased views and calling it science.
Stop trying to convert those of differing faiths (an individual's path is for them to decide, not be led to).
Stop denouncing that which has been proven, even if it is in direct conflict with your belief.
Stop trying to force your view of god into places it doesn't belong, and try to cover the truth of it by claiming that you really are trying to acknowledge all faiths, and the word "God" is generic in this case.
Insist that your particular place of worship pay taxes on any money it is not using in a charitable way.

Well, I'm not a historian, so at a glance, I would say no. It would be nice if people could just worship how they choose with out causing some political strife some where.
I suppose the real problem is a form of global fanaticism. You see, there are people out there that are so proud and so self-righteous about being what ever faith they are, they forget the rules of the faith all together.

One of the most hypocritical things I've seen happen....
Joe: We live in the greatest country ever! We have freedom of Speech!
Fred: Yeah, but the USA sucks
Joe: I'm gonna kick your [censure] for talking [censure] about my country!

See what I mean? it's kinda like that. Best wishes.
