3 guys go for dinner, each buys a £10 steak. At the end of the meal, they collect £30 between the three of them to cover the cost of the meals and gives it to the waitress. She goes back to the cash register, where the overlooking manager says "Those dinners are discounted, you need to give them £5 back." So the waitress gets the five pounds, and returns to the table. Not knowing how to split £5 between the three of them, she gives 1 pound to each of the three patrons, and kept two for herself.
Now if you do the math, together they paid £30, got £3 back meaning they only paid £27. The waitress kept £2. This totals £29. Where did the last pound go?
PS works the same in dollars too for all you young americans tuning in

This one's as old as the hills!
There is no missing pound. There is £25 in the till (£30 less the £5), the waitress has £2 and the diners have £1 each (3x£1=£3), and £25+£2+£3 = £30.
(PS: The trick in the question is that is says they paid £30 - they didn't, they paid £25)

A question from you that isn't racist, that's a first. I'll answer it anyway.
There is $25 for the bill ($30 less the $5), the waitress has $2 and the diners have $1 each (3x$1=$3), and $25+$2+$3 = $30.

No, £10 steak X 3 = £30
discount £5 = £25
waitress gives back £1 to each = £3 and keeps £2 so
£5 discount she gave back £3 they paid £28 and she kept £2 = £5 no missing £1!!!
Do u understand took me a bit admit.

30-5 is 25 plus 3 is 28. They paid 28 total and the waitress got 2 which totals 30.

30 paid for the meal - 5 discount =25 paid for the meal
+3 returned = 28 + 2 the waitress kept.
Apparently you forgot one of the guys at the table. Is this supposed to be a teaser, or are you just bad with math?

your summary is wrong, they paid 30 got 3 back makes 27, the waitress kept two which makes 25 which is waht they paid for the meal.
you added the £2 that ought to have been deducted

No, they paid 25, got 3 back (28) and gave the waitress 2 (30)
But thanks for drawing this anomaly to our attention: although I do think Douglas Adams beat you to it, with his Improbability Drive. Sounds like you should try his books,if you haven't already...

Funny I posted the same question about 3 friends in a motel, the desk clerk and bellboy. My mother had heard it back in the 40's and hasn't figured it out yet!
~Good luck with that!
