It could be a number of things.
First thing that comes to mind is fleas.
Check along his spine and by his tail...if he does have fleas you're more likely to see flea poop there.
If you don't find fleas, it's possible that he's stressed about something...I know sounds weird, but cats get stressed just like people do.
Have their been any changes in his enviroment?
If so, that could cause stress and also be the reason he's pulling out his hair.
Last thing, cats and dogs have anal glands and sometimes they get clogged...I never knew this until it happend to one of my cats, she was dragging her butt on the floor and pulling the hair out of her tail.
I took her to the Vet and he had to open up the gland.
I'm sure the experiance wasn't pleasant for her ( they have to put a finger up the cats rectum)...but it opened up the gland and she was fine.

cats pull their hair out for a number reasons. One of the main two is Stress or Allergies. If you have recently moved, got a new pet or you lifestyle has changed in anyway. Cats can be very sensitive to changes in theirs and your life. If they are stressed or unhappy because of a change they pull hair out. Otherwise, it could be allergies. It will cost a pretty penny to get the cat tested at the vet's office though. There are other reasons for this to happen but those are the most common two.

My cat started pulling out his fur when I put my dog down. My rottweiler and my cat were best buddies. Weird, I know. But, my cat started pulling it out slowly. I started to notice that he had a bald patch. I thought he was allergic to something. Then, it suddenly got worse. Then I saw he was pulling it out. So, we went to the vet. I told the vet that I felt that he was stressed and depressed. He agreed. He put him on kitty Prozac. He isn't on the drug anymore.(made him a zombie) He doesn't pull his hair out anymore

A friend of mine had an older cat that did this, and later it was determined to be because the two anal sacs were inflamed and she was in pain and there was infection. Once the vet drained them she was pretty good, but sometimes she did it for nervous reasons too.

it most likely started with a small irritation that your kitty kept scratching, making it more irritated, then the kitty probably started biting the spot, pulling hair out, irritating a larger area, more biting, and more fur removal

ALLERGIES! it will cost about $200.00 to find out what she's allergic to. But That's a sign of allergies.
