I have tried cutting it in half and opening it in water to release the arils, but then spend at least half an hour trying to remove the membrane (the white part) and have also used a standard colander, but nothing works! I love the fruit, but it seems like there has to be a better way to get at it! please help!

Listen to me, I just talked to my parents about it because they eat it all the time. They said that you try holding on two sides of the pomegranate and press on the center to get the seeds to pop-out. That way you don't have to deal with the membrane. It's kind of like the process of you folding a pair of socks. Hope it helps!!!

Yes, I love this fruit too. I eat about a five a day-when in season.
Large ones-Theon said it best, but forgot the part about wearing a plastic glove.
Cut in half, Flip upside down-so flat side is facing a stainless steel bowl or glass-Make sure it is a big bowl, and tap the back side of the fruit. I use the back of my chef's knife or my steel (the long knife sharpener that looks like a thick poker)
Other than that-you can always sit in front of the tv. apron on, covered in paper towels, cut it in half. Get 2 bowls and break apart. Cutting it in quarters only makes it harded to get the seeds out.

You know those little recipe cards at Walmart? I saw one in the produce section with the pomegranates and it showed how to open one. I didn't look at it very carefully, but the lady in the picture was holding it over a deep bowl and then the other picture showed the little things inside rolling out. She didn't look stressed out in the picture, so maybe she knows something that we don't.

After I opened it up using a knife I peeled it all . It takes a little time but its good eating it. I have never put it in water so I don't know about that.
