when its cold and windy the extremities of the body (fingers toes etc...) get cold quickly the feet are covered so are o.k. but the hands are not. the gloves allow players to concentrate on the game and not the weather...

Some players need gloves as they spend more time picking themselves up off the cold ground than playing

Because it's cold.
England can get quite chilly in the winter, and some players are not used to it. It is even colder in the Scandinavian leagues (Sweden, Norway, Denmark).
